Nigeria Eyes India’s Tech Strength To Unlock Youth Potential At BRICS

Nigeria is looking to tap into India’s technological advancement and youth development model as it seeks stronger economic and strategic partnerships with emerging economies at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the summit, is leading Nigeria’s delegation in engagements expected to focus on trade, investment, agriculture, technology, manufacturing and industrial development.

The Nigerian delegation includes the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole; Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani; and Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal.

Nigeria became a BRICS partner country in January 2025 and has since used the platform to strengthen South-South cooperation and expand economic and diplomatic ties with major emerging economies.

A major area of interest for Nigeria at the summit is India’s experience in deploying technology, artificial intelligence and digital innovation to create opportunities for its large youthful population.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu said Nigeria was particularly interested in learning from India’s application of technology to agriculture, the digital economy and artificial intelligence, as well as its efforts to increase women’s participation in the technology sector.

The Foreign Affairs Minister said India’s ability to engage its youthful population through technology represented a major strength that Nigeria could learn from and adapt to its own development needs.
