NiMet DG Charles Anosike Elected ACMAD Board President

The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has been elected President of the Board of Governors of the African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development (ACMAD).

Anosike was elected to a four year term on September 10, 2026, during the 24th Ordinary Session of the ACMAD Board of Governors in Cotonou, Benin. The session was held alongside the 22nd African Climate Outlook Forum (ACCOF22).

His election places Nigeria at the forefront of efforts to strengthen Africa’s weather and climate information systems at a time when countries across the continent are facing increasing risks from extreme weather events and climate change.

As President of the ACMAD Board, Anosike is expected to provide strategic leadership towards strengthening the Centre’s institutional governance, partnerships and delivery of climate services. His role will also support ACMAD’s mandate of promoting the effective application of weather and climate information to sustainable socio economic development across Africa.

The development further underscores NiMet’s growing role in Africa’s meteorological community and Nigeria’s commitment to improving weather and climate services for the protection of lives and property, enhanced climate resilience and stronger economic development.

His election also comes as African countries intensify efforts to improve their capacity to anticipate and respond to weather and climate related disasters, in line with the United Nations Early Warnings for All initiative.

The ACMAD Board session brought together members of the Board of Governors and key institutional partners to assess the Centre’s progress and chart its strategic direction.

The high level opening featured ACMAD Director General, Dr. Ousmane Ndiaye; Vice President of the ACMAD Board and Director of Niger Meteorological Services, Dr. Adamou Aïssatou Sitta; Director of the African Union Commission’s Department of Sustainable Environment and Blue Economy, Mr. Harsen Nyambe; and Benin’s Minister of Living Environment and Transport in charge of Sustainable Development, H.E. Georges Alé.

Anosike’s election is expected to further strengthen continental cooperation in the provision and application of reliable weather and climate information as African nations confront growing climate and disaster risks.
