10-Man Man City Defeat Manchester United in Dramatic Old Trafford Derby

Manchester City secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Erling Haaland scoring the decisive goal in a dramatic Manchester derby.

The victory maintained City’s perfect start to the Premier League season and moved them to 12 points from four matches, level with Arsenal at the top of the table but behind the Gunners on goal difference. United, meanwhile, remain on four points after four league matches.

The match took another dramatic turn in the first half when Manchester City were reduced to 10 men after Phil Foden was sent off for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes.

United were expected to take advantage of the numerical superiority, but City defended resolutely and continued to threaten on the counter.

Haaland eventually broke the deadlock in the 60th minute. His initial effort appeared to be affected by an offside call, but VAR intervened and the goal was eventually awarded after it was determined that United defender Patrick Dorgu’s outstretched foot had played the Norwegian striker onside.

United pushed forward in search of an equaliser and came close on several occasions. Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo both hit the woodwork, while Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma produced important saves to preserve his clean sheet.

Despite playing with a man advantage for much of the match, United struggled to turn their possession into a goal. City remained organised and held on for a significant away victory.

The defeat leaves Manchester United 13th in the Premier League with just four points from their opening four matches, increasing pressure on manager Michael Carrick.

For City, the result represents another statement of intent early in the campaign. They have now won all four of their league matches and sit alongside Arsenal at the summit.

The Manchester derby also provided another reminder of the fine margins involved in the fixture, with City’s resilience after Foden’s dismissal ultimately proving decisive at Old Trafford.
