Oluremi Tinubu Urges Nigerians to Strengthen Democracy, Protect Citizens’ Rights

First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to continue working towards strengthening the country’s democracy and ensuring that the rights, dignity and freedoms of citizens are protected.

The First Lady made the call in a message commemorating the 2026 International Day of Democracy, observed on Tuesday, September 15, with the theme, “Bring Human Rights into Focus.”

According to her, democracy can only thrive when the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens are respected and protected.

Senator Tinubu noted that Nigeria, 65 years after gaining independence and more than 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, had made significant progress in its democratic journey.

She highlighted stronger institutions, peaceful transitions of power and increased citizen participation in governance as some of the gains recorded over the years.

The First Lady, however, stressed the need for Nigerians to collectively sustain efforts aimed at deepening democratic values and ensuring that democracy delivers for all citizens.

“Let us collectively continue to work together to strengthen our democracy, ensure that it serves the interests of all Nigerians, and build a more peaceful and prosperous nation,” she said.

Senator Tinubu also extended her goodwill to Nigerians on the occasion, wishing citizens a happy International Day of Democracy.

The International Day of Democracy provides an opportunity for countries and citizens around the world to reflect on democratic principles, human rights, political participation and the need for accountable and inclusive governance.
