Grenada is looking to attract Nigerian technology entrepreneurs and investors to stimulate economic growth, strengthen business partnerships and transfer technological expertise through its visa-free entry arrangement for Nigerians.

Chief Executive Officer of Grenada’s Investment Migration Agency (IMA), Thomas Anthony, said the Caribbean nation hopes to leverage Nigeria’s more developed technology sector to build local capacity, expand markets and create new commercial opportunities.

Anthony, who spoke to journalists, said the initiative would enable Grenadian businesses and young people to learn from Nigerian entrepreneurs visiting the island.

“Our young people can learn from those entrepreneurs that would necessarily come to Grenada as a result of this opportunity. So that there will be knowledge transfer,” he said.

He explained that closer engagement with Nigerian businesses could also help Grenadian technology companies access a larger market and establish partnerships beyond their domestic economy.

“The market size will grow so that the Grenadians also in that same tech space, for example, will have a bigger market to which they can access,” he added.

Grenada Seeks Access To Wider Caribbean Market

Anthony said Grenada’s relatively small population makes regional market access important for businesses seeking sustainable growth.

The country has approximately 120,000 residents, while the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) has about 700,000 people and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) more than 20 million.

According to him, the free movement of people, goods and services within these regional blocs provides businesses operating in Grenada with opportunities to reach customers across a wider geographical area.

He also stressed the need to increase the country’s population to support economic expansion and long-term sustainability.

Grenada, popularly known as the Spice Isle, comprises the main island of Grenada and the smaller islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique. The country is a major regional producer of nutmeg and other spices.

Anthony disclosed that an estimated 350,000 Grenadians live in the diaspora, highlighting the need to strengthen the country’s domestic economic base.

“We need to grow the population in the country to make the economy sustainable, viable,” he said.

Visa-Free Arrangement To Ease Travel

The IMA chief executive said the new arrangement would reduce travel barriers for Nigerian entrepreneurs and prospective investors seeking business opportunities in Grenada.

He noted that Nigerians travelling to the Caribbean often face additional requirements when their journeys involve transit through countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom.

According to him, the visa-free initiative could make business visits and investment exploration more accessible by reducing the need to rely on those transit routes.

“Getting to Grenada or to the Caribbean will now no longer mean having to go through the US or the UK where you would have to have a visa, and we know the challenges with Nigerians getting visas to some of these places,” he said.

Anthony also identified flight connections through Antigua and Barbuda as another potential travel option for Nigerians visiting the region.

The arrangement is expected to encourage business meetings, investment assessments and exchanges between entrepreneurs from both countries.

However, prospective travellers would need to confirm applicable entry conditions and available flight connections before making travel arrangements.

Anthony Calls For Reciprocal Visa-Free Access

Anthony expressed hope that Nigeria would extend similar visa-free privileges to Grenadian citizens to encourage greater movement between both countries.

He said reciprocal access would allow Grenadians to explore Nigeria’s business environment, acquire new knowledge and develop ideas that could contribute to their country’s economic growth.

“My hope is that there will be reciprocity. Visa-free access for Grenadians into Nigeria, and that will allow them to learn and grow and bring new ideas back to Grenada,” he said.

“Both nations can benefit from having this reciprocal visa-free access.”

Investment Opportunities For Nigerians

Anthony explained that the Investment Migration Agency works with the Grenadian government to process citizenship applications from foreign nationals who invest in the country under its investment migration programme.

He said the agency encourages prospective applicants to visit Grenada and assess available investment opportunities before selecting projects for consideration under the programme.

The visa-free arrangement, he added, could make it easier for Nigerian investors to evaluate projects and understand the country’s business environment before committing funds.

Grenada’s Honorary Consul in Nigeria, Bidemi Sonoiki, announced the initiative in June as part of efforts to strengthen economic and commercial relations between the two countries.

The relationship has supported government-to-government engagement, private-sector collaboration and the establishment of the Nigeria-Grenada Chamber of Commerce.

Both countries are exploring business opportunities in tourism, healthcare, agriculture, agro-processing, logistics, education, financial technology, renewable energy and real estate.

The visa-free initiative is expected to support these efforts by facilitating business travel, encouraging investment exploration and creating opportunities for commercial and educational exchanges.

For Grenada, attracting Nigerian entrepreneurs could provide access to technology expertise and new business networks, while Nigerian investors could explore opportunities in the Caribbean market.
