Nigerian Ex-International Monday Kanu’s Middle Road: When The Player Must Become More Important Than the Union

𝗕𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹 𝗟𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘆 𝗢𝗸𝗼𝗸𝘂

Sometimes the most important contribution to a long argument comes from the person who refuses to join the shouting.

In a recent discussion among former Nigerian footballers about competing players’ organisations, Nigerian ex-international 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗞𝗮𝗻𝘂 moved the conversation away from which faction was right and toward whether Nigerian players could finally speak with one voice.

After different views were expressed about players’ union structure, mandate and representation, Kanu wrote:

“𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗱.”

He continued:

“𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗡𝗟𝗬 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗽𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗮 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽.”

Then came his declaration of independence:

“𝗔𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲, 𝗜 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝗼𝘄𝗻.”

Those words do not crown a winner.

They ask whether the argument has become more important than the people it is supposed to serve.

𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗜𝗦 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗔 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

Kanu’s concern did not begin with this exchange.

On 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟵, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, Sports247 journalist 𝗢𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮 𝗔𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘆𝗼 reported Kanu’s criticism of the exclusion of players’ representation from the NFF Annual General Assembly held in Asaba on October 4. Kanu called for recognition of the players’ union as a vital partner, formal representation, meaningful dialogue and revival of the reconciliation process among divided groups.

Sports247 identified him as a member of Nigeria’s squad at the 𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟳 𝗙𝗜𝗙𝗔 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 in Chile. Earlier public reporting also records him discussing player welfare, health insurance, pensions and collective bargaining.

So when Kanu says today, “𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲,” there is a record behind the statement.

𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗘𝗗 𝗝𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗦 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢𝗢

Kanu’s later reaction — “𝗕𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘀𝗲𝘆𝗲” — needs its full context.

On 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, sports journalist 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗲 𝗢𝗺𝗼𝗸𝗵𝘂𝗮 reacted in the Sports Yarn Class WhatsApp forum to a report about renewed disagreement over players’ union leadership:

“𝗜 𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗲. 𝗬𝗲𝘁, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲?”

The humour carried a serious question:

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀’ 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻?

Omokhua is not an outsider to the game. His work appears under a SportsDay byline, and public reporting identifies him as having served on a Rangers International FC academicals committee.

His question echoes a warning issued much earlier by veteran Nigerian football journalist and longtime ESPN contributor 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻 𝗨𝗱𝗼𝗵

On 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟭𝟲, 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟲, Udoh published “𝗞𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶, 𝗔𝗺𝗼𝗱𝘂: 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗙𝗙 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻” on his Beyond The Ball Game platform.

Udoh did not absolve the NFF. He said the federation had a responsibility to pay its employees on time. But he also turned scrutiny toward the players’ and coaches’ associations.

Writing about the historic division between NANF and APFON, Udoh said the splintering had left players without meaningful representation and concluded that the players’ union and coaches’ association needed “𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴, 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲.”

That was 2016.

𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻 𝗨𝗱𝗼𝗵: “𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴, 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲.”

𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗞𝗮𝗻𝘂 in 2026: “𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲.”

Different men.

Different moments.

The same unresolved institutional question.

𝗜𝗙 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗜𝗡 𝗔 𝗚𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗦 𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗘

There is an old warning:

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗴𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲, 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀.

The Nigeria Football Federation, leagues and clubs should face scrutiny over governance, contracts, unpaid obligations and player welfare.

But organisations seeking a seat inside that same Glass House must also be willing to accept scrutiny.

Who gives them their mandate?

How are 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 consulted?

How are leaders chosen?

When are congresses held?

What services exist when wages go unpaid or contracts are breached?

Where is the collective bargaining structure?

And how much of the organisation is actually shaped by the footballers whose livelihoods are at stake today?

Those are not hostile questions.

They are governance questions.

At the 𝗙𝗜𝗙𝗣𝗥𝗢 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝘆 in Cairo on 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟯 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟭𝟰, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, Nigeria was among seven countries represented by non-member unions whose associations were aspiring to join FIFPRO.

Then, on 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟭𝟬, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, FIFA and FIFPRO signed a landmark agreement formally recognising FIFPRO as the 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 and as the social partner representing players as employees.

The international direction is toward organised player voice.

Nigeria’s question therefore becomes unavoidable:

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿?

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗬𝗘𝗥 𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗪𝗔𝗜𝗧

This is where the argument must leave personalities and return to livelihoods.

On 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟯, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, TheCable journalist 𝗜𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗵𝘂 reported Super Falcons captain 𝗥𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗷𝗶𝗯𝗮𝗱𝗲 saying she had spent ten years with FC Robo Queens without receiving a salary.

On 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟳, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, Colin Udoh reported for ESPN that Super Eagles players had threatened to boycott training and their trip to Marrakech during the Africa Cup of Nations amid a dispute over unpaid bonuses.

Those cases are different, but together they illustrate why player representation cannot be ceremonial.

A playing career is short.

𝗔 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄.

𝗔 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄.

𝗔𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗷𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄.

A young professional who does not understand his or her rights needs education and representation 𝗻𝗼𝘄.

Former players can debate structure for another five years.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴.

That is the difference.

“𝗕𝗨𝗟𝗟𝗦𝗘𝗬𝗘”

After reading the commentary that brought these warnings together — the division, the questions from seasoned journalists and the continuing struggle for one credible collective voice — Monday Kanu responded:

“𝗕𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘀𝗲𝘆𝗲.”

Then:

“𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀.”

His reaction should not be converted into support for one faction.

His own earlier words point in precisely the opposite direction:

“𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴.”

That is what makes his intervention useful.

He is not asking one organisation to conquer another.

He is asking whether everyone can move beyond preeminence.

That is a harder demand.

It requires people who have spent years defending structures, histories and positions to ask whether preserving those structures is more important than building something the current generation of players can trust and own.

𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗗𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗣, 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗢𝗪𝗡𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗛𝗜𝗣

Former footballers have an important place in players’ representation.

They carry experience. They remember what previous generations endured. They can mentor, organise, negotiate and protect.

But 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽.

A players’ union cannot become principally about the people who 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆.

Its heartbeat must remain the people 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗼𝘄.

Active professional players should know their rights.

They should understand the organisations claiming to represent them.

They should participate in choosing their representatives.

They should be able to ask for constitutions, congresses, accounts, services and measurable results.

Because representation is not something done 𝘁𝗼 players.

𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺.

𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗩𝗢𝗜𝗖𝗘 — 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗪𝗛𝗢𝗠?

Perhaps Nigerian football has spent too much time asking which players’ organisation deserves recognition.

Monday Kanu offers another starting point:

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲.

But that voice must belong, above all, to the 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 whose contracts, wages, health and careers are on the line.

𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻 𝗨𝗱𝗼𝗵 raised the unity problem publicly in 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟲.

𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗲 𝗢𝗺𝗼𝗸𝗵𝘂𝗮 laughed at the contradiction in 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.

𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗞𝗮𝗻𝘂 answered:

“𝗕𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘀𝗲𝘆𝗲.”

The dates change.

The names change.

The players change.

The unresolved question remains.

Former players can debate for another decade.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗻𝗲.

𝗔𝗨𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗥’𝗦 𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗘

This commentary is grounded in 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹.

The standard applied throughout is simple: 𝗶𝗳 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁.
