Some footballers finish their playing careers and quietly move away from the sport. Others discover that the experiences gained on the field can become a foundation for teaching, mentoring and helping younger generations succeed.
Muyiwa โMannyโ Motajo belongs to the latter group.
A member of Nigeriaโs historic 1983 Flying Eagles generation, Manny went on to establish a professional football career in the United States, including appearances in Major League Soccer.
His journey eventually brought him into youth coaching, where decades of playing experience became valuable knowledge for young footballers.
It is a story that deserves recognition.

Manny developed his abilities within Nigeriaโs competitive football environment, where talented young players worked to establish themselves through organized clubs and national youth-team programmes.
His playing background included National Sports Commission (NSC), National Bank Football Club and First Bank Football Club.
These institutions provided important opportunities for footballers during an era when corporate and government-supported teams played influential roles in Nigerian football development.
Manny distinguished himself as a defender, a position requiring concentration, discipline and the ability to anticipate an opponentโs movements.
Defenders rarely enjoy the same publicity as prolific goalscorers.
Yet every successful team depends on players willing to accept the demanding responsibility of preventing goals, organizing defensive positions and maintaining composure under pressure.
Those qualities became central to Mannyโs football identity.

Manny was an integral member of Nigeriaโs pioneering Flying Eagles generation under the late Coach Christopher Udemezue.
As a defender, he participated throughout our qualification campaign for the 1983 FIFA World Youth Championship, contributing to the collective effort that changed Nigerian football history.
The journey demanded discipline, determination and teamwork as we faced Zimbabwe and Guinea in our pursuit of a historic qualification.
On January 8, 1983, Nigeria defeated Guinea 2โ0 in Lagos, securing the countryโs first qualification for a FIFA World Cup tournament at any level.

Although the final tournament squad was determined separately, his contribution to securing Nigeriaโs place in Mexico remained an important part of that achievement.
His national youth-team experience also provided a foundation for the impressive professional football career he later established in the United States.

In 1989, Manny entered Howard University in Washington, D.C.
He played collegiate soccer there from 1989 through 1992.
For a Nigerian footballer, adapting to the American university system presented a different kind of challenge.
College athletes were expected to balance academic responsibilities with training, competitive matches and the demands of university life.
Howard provided Manny with an opportunity to continue his football development while pursuing higher education.
His American collegiate experience eventually opened the door to professional opportunities.

Following university football, Manny joined the Washington Mustangs in 1994, competing in the United States Interregional Soccer League.
He subsequently played for the Washington Warthogs in the Continental Indoor Soccer League.
Indoor soccer introduced different tactical and physical demands, including smaller playing areas and faster transitions.
For a defender, adapting to that environment required quick decisions, positioning and technical discipline.
Manny successfully continued developing his professional career.
His progress brought him an opportunity that would become one of his most important football achievements.

In 1996, Major League Soccer began its inaugural season.
Manny participated in the leagueโs inaugural player-selection process and was drafted by the Los Angeles Galaxy.
He became part of the Galaxyโs first-ever squad, appearing in 20 league matches during that historic opening season.

A Nigerian footballer whose journey included our historic Flying Eagles generation was now participating in the launch of Americaโs new major professional soccer league.
The significance extended beyond one season.
Major League Soccer eventually developed into an important destination for international footballers, attracting established stars and creating opportunities for young American players.
Manny had been there at the beginning.
The LA Galaxy itself later recognized him among the players who formed the clubโs inaugural team.

After his time with the Galaxy, Manny continued playing professional soccer.
He represented the Jacksonville Cyclones in 1997 before joining the New England Revolution in May 1998.
He made 17 league appearances for New England across the 1998 and 1999 seasons.
His professional career had now taken him through several different American football environments.
Those experiences reflected adaptability, perseverance and the ability to compete across different levels of the sport.
From Nigerian clubs to American college soccer, indoor football and Major League Soccer, Manny had built a career spanning different football systems.

After his playing career, Manny remained actively involved in football through coaching.
His published coaching biography documents more than 20 years of experience working with young players.
His coaching associations include:
โข ๐๐ ๐ฆ๐๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐, a respected youth soccer organization in the Washington metropolitan area.
โข ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐บ๐, where his coaching rรฉsumรฉ includes a Maryland State Cup championship in 2022 and a finalist finish in 2023.
โข ๐ฃ๐ผ๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฎ๐ฐ ๐ฆ๐ผ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐๐๐ผ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป, where he has coached competitive youth teams.
His approach emphasizes learning, discipline and continuous improvement.
In his coaching biography, Manny identifies one valuable lesson he received during his career: the importance of learning something from every coach.
That philosophy reflects the attitude required for long-term success in football.
Even experienced players and coaches must remain willing to learn.

Manny has also remained connected with members of our historic Flying Eagles generation.
In 2024, the former teammates came together to support Abdul Rahman Jeje, the son of our late captain Ali Jeje, through an educational scholarship initiative.
Manny was among the members acknowledged in that collective effort.
The initiative reflected something important about our generation.
Football had introduced us through competition, but the responsibilities we felt toward one another extended beyond our playing careers.
Supporting the education of a late teammateโs son was one way of demonstrating that commitment.
For Manny, whose own journey had combined football, university education and youth coaching, the importance of educational opportunities was especially relevant.
