The World Need Common Security Against Climate Change Because Climate Change Has Become Permanent And No Longer Weather Variations
BY AVM RTD AKUGBE IYAMU MNSA fsi
The rising temperatures across the world remain an emergency of international concern and catastrophe of great magnitude. The risk of global warming is high at the national, regional and global levels. This should put the world at alert.
Thus for all important stake holders on climate action seem to be in the same page and the hope is that it stays that way. The world cannot afford to let down their guard. This year’s flooding spread panic across the world with 245 deaths in Nigeria and 214000 people displaced.
Climate change actions is in need of significant and effective change yet the change desperately needed may not necessarily may not be found in conferences, a loss and damage funds or adhoc mitigation and adaptation. It must begin with a fundamental global transformation of the relationship between the industrialized countries and the vulnerable countries because our world is sleeping in the dark and the rest of us have fallen asleep in the light. We have access to information, weather patterns and predictions, forecasts, technologies and innovations and the painful lessons and effects of our collective experience in climate change.
If we do not use our technology to defend ourselves against climate change, we may eventually lose our harmonious relationship with the planet. History offers grave warnings about the consequences of poor environmental and disaster management.
As we move from one disaster cycle to the other, we must learn to distinguish promise communication from climate evidence. Mention of climate actions at every conferences is not a proof of solidarity, empathy and care and a loss and damage funds are not evidence of transformation and intervention.
A global climate action should be a credible blueprint for mitigation and adaptation. We should acknowledge the limitations of common global security against climate change and revise our policy and strategies when evidence demonstrates that a different approach would work better. As climate change has revealed, the planet has often been described as a paradox because of the sharp contrast between it massive resources and multidimensional environmental degradation. That is why at every climate gathering how to resolve the paradox should dominate the debates.
