Meet The 1983 Flying Eagles: Part 29 — Honouring Officer Balogun; The Military Fitness Officer Who Helped Build Our Endurance

When we reflect on the historic achievements of Nigeria’s 1983 Flying Eagles, we naturally remember the goals, the saves and the performances that brought us recognition.

But behind those achievements were individuals whose work took place far from the applause of football supporters.

One of them was Officer Balogun.

A military officer assigned to our physical preparation, he helped develop the stamina and endurance required to compete at the international level.

I still remember those long road runs.

We ran and ran, sometimes wondering how much farther we would be expected to go.

For military men accustomed to physical conditioning, those exercises were part of a familiar discipline.

For young footballers, they were demanding lessons in endurance and perseverance.

Officer Balogun understood that talent alone was insufficient.

A footballer needed the capacity to keep running, remain focused and fulfill his responsibilities even as exhaustion set in.

His work complemented the technical and tactical instruction provided by our coaches, Christopher Udemezue and Isiaka Yakubu.

Today, I recognize Officer Balogun for the part he played in preparing our historic generation.

𝗛𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗷𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

His contribution was measured in discipline, endurance and the standards he helped us develop.

To Officer Balogun and his family, your place in the history of our Flying Eagles generation deserves respect and recognition.

Thank you for your service to Nigerian football.
