Russia Claims Overnight Strikes on Ukrainian Steel Plants, Power
Russia’s Defence Ministry has claimed that its forces carried out a large-scale overnight attack on Ukrainian industrial and energy infrastructure, including the country’s largest steelworks in Kryvyi Rih.
In a statement on Saturday, October 17, 2026, the ministry said the operation targeted facilities it alleged were supporting Ukraine’s military-industrial complex. The claims were reported by Reuters, which said it could not independently verify the reported strikes or their impact.
The steelworks in Kryvyi Rih is owned by multinational steel producer ArcelorMittal. The company suspended operations at the facility in September following a series of Russian ballistic missile attacks, adding to the pressure on Ukraine’s industrial sector as the war continues.
Russia’s Defence Ministry also said its forces struck an electricity substation in Zhytomyr, in northwestern Ukraine, as well as another steel plant in Zaporizhzhia, a southeastern city close to the front line.
The ministry further claimed that a cargo vessel in the Black Sea had been hit, alleging that the ship was transporting military supplies to Ukraine’s port of Odesa. The allegation had not been independently confirmed.
The reported operation comes amid an intensifying Russian campaign against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure ahead of winter, raising concerns about electricity supplies, industrial production and the impact of further attacks on civilians.
Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said on Friday that Russian attacks had caused power outages affecting more than one million consumers at some point, with emergency restrictions imposed across several regions. Repair crews were working to restore electricity where security conditions permitted, according to Reuters.
Separate reports from the Associated Press also described Russian attacks across multiple Ukrainian regions, with casualties and damage to energy infrastructure reported as the conflict continued.
Steel production remains important to Ukraine’s economy, providing jobs, export revenue and materials used across the industrial sector. Disruptions to major facilities can further weaken economic activity and complicate reconstruction efforts.
The latest reported strikes underscore the continuing vulnerability of Ukraine’s industrial facilities, electricity network and Black Sea shipping routes. However, the precise extent of the damage from Saturday’s reported operation remains unclear, and independent confirmation of the Russian military’s claims was not immediately available.
