Obidients to Hold Nationwide Candlelight Vigil for #EndSARS Victims
The Obidient Movement has announced plans to commemorate protesters who lost their lives during the #EndSARS demonstrations with a nationwide candlelight vigil, balloon release and prayer session on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
The event, tagged “Obidients Remember,” is expected to hold across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), bringing together members of the movement and support groups to honour those who died during the protests.
According to the organisers, the programme will begin at 5:00 p.m., while the venue details are expected to be announced later.
The Global Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr. Mo, is listed as the host of the commemorative gathering.
As part of preparations, state coordinators and support groups have been urged to mobilise members for the event, which will feature prayers, candle lighting and balloon releases in memory of the deceased.
The organisers also disclosed that a condolence register would be provided for participants to record their names and the support groups they represent. Attendees have been asked to wear black as a mark of respect for the victims.
The planned commemoration comes six years after the #EndSARS protests began gaining momentum in October 2020, when thousands of young Nigerians took to the streets to demand an end to police brutality and the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
The Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos emerged as a major centre of the demonstrations, particularly on October 20, 2020, when security personnel confronted protesters. The events of that night remain a subject of public debate and calls for accountability.
The #EndSARS movement became a defining moment in Nigeria’s youth-led civic activism, drawing national and international attention to allegations of police abuse, demands for police reform and broader concerns about human rights.
The Obidient Movement said the nationwide remembrance would provide an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices made during the demonstrations and honour those who lost their lives.
The organisers are calling on members and affiliated support groups across the country to participate in the October 20 activities as a way of keeping the memories of the victims alive and renewing calls for justice, accountability and respect for human rights.
