India, Nigeria Strengthen Ties As Dandiya Night Showcases Cultural Heritage

The High Commission of India in Abuja has reaffirmed the importance of cultural diplomacy in strengthening relations between India and Nigeria as it hosted Dandiya Night 2026 to celebrate Indian cultural heritage.

The event, held on October 18 at the High Commission’s Chancery premises, was organised in collaboration with the Indian Cultural Association (ICA), Abuja, and the Indian Women Empowerment Association (IWEA).

It brought together members of the Indian community, heads of missions, Nigerian dignitaries and friends of India for an evening of cultural performances and festivities marking the Hindu festival of Navratri.

The celebration featured traditional Indian attire, Dandiya dances and Garba performances, highlighting India’s rich cultural traditions and festive heritage.

Speaking at the event, India’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Abhishek Singh, highlighted the significance of Navratri and commended the ICA and IWEA for their efforts in preserving cultural traditions and promoting community engagement.

Singh also underscored the contributions of the Indian diaspora, which comprises more than 60,000 people in Nigeria, to the country’s economic and social development.

He described the community as an important bridge between India and Nigeria, noting the role of cultural diplomacy and people-to-people exchanges in deepening the longstanding relationship between the two countries.

The envoy encouraged members of the Indian community to sustain efforts to promote their cultural heritage and continue welcoming Nigerians to Indian festivals.

The event, according to the High Commission, reaffirmed the role of the Indian diaspora in fostering mutual understanding and strengthening friendship between the peoples of India and Nigeria.
