Selena Gomez has revealed that years of vaping nicotine have permanently altered her voice, and she is using her experience to warn fans against taking up the habit.

In a video posted to her Instagram Stories on Sunday, October 18, the 34-year-old singer and actress stated plainly that the damage cannot be undone. “I’m not gonna be able to change my voice,” Gomez said. “I vaped nicotine a lot.”

Gomez, who recently quit the habit, described the difficulty of breaking the addiction and urged anyone considering vaping to reconsider. “Nicotine is so hard to quit, and I think I just wanted to say, if you’re going through it, or if you’re even trying to vape, it’s just not worth it,” she said. “It’s so stupid, and it’s changed my voice.”

Addressing fans who have commented on the shift in her speaking voice over the years, Gomez responded with characteristic bluntness. “So if you guys don’t like listening to my voice, that’s totally understandable. I don’t mind. Just don’t listen to it,” she said with a laugh.

Despite the permanent change, Gomez expressed optimism about her decision to stop. “I am really excited because I stopped and I just hope I can keep it up,” she said. “It’s really hard, but I know if you are going through something you can get through it too. It sucks.”

The revelation follows previous speculation about her voice. During an Instagram Live session in December 2025, Gomez attributed the change to her throat swelling internally, without mentioning vaping. “Sometimes things happen. I get weird. My throat kind of swells inside sometimes. That’s all,” she said at the time.

Gomez, who was diagnosed with lupus in 2015, has long been open about her health struggles, including a kidney transplant in 2017. Lupus flare-ups can cause inflammation around the larynx, which may also affect the voice.

Her comments come amid growing scrutiny of vaping’s health effects. A recent report linked vaping to breathing problems, wheezing, dental issues, poor sleep and mental health problems, though long-term effects remain unknown.
