LekeeLekee, a social media platform designed for Nigerians and the global diaspora, has introduced free voice and video calling, allowing members to communicate across countries without paying international call charges.

The company announced the launch on Thursday, October 22, saying the feature is available on its Android and iPhone applications and through web browsers.

The new service allows users to make voice and video calls directly from existing chats without leaving the platform or sharing their phone numbers.

According to the company, calls between LekeeLekee members are free regardless of their locations, although mobile data charges may apply depending on their network providers.

The feature is expected to make communication easier for families and friends living in different countries, including Nigerians abroad who want to stay connected with relatives at home.

LekeeLekee said users can initiate voice calls by tapping the phone icon in a chat or start video calls through the camera icon. The platform also keeps a record of incoming, outgoing and missed calls to make returning calls easier.

The company added that users could invite friends and family to join the platform through WhatsApp. Invitations are sent from members’ own WhatsApp accounts, with recipients able to join through a link.

Speaking on the launch, LekeeLekee co-founder, Charlie Pyper, said the feature would enable members to hear and see one another within the same platform they already use for messaging, posting and live interactions.

The company also outlined measures intended to limit unwanted calls. Under its current rules, members can receive calls from people they follow, people whose chat requests they have accepted, or people they have previously called. Users can also block unwanted callers.

Additional safeguards include restrictions on repeated unanswered calls and limits on the number of different people a member can call in a day.

LekeeLekee said it would introduce paid calls to ordinary mobile phones and landlines in a future update. The planned service would allow members to contact people who are not registered on the platform, with per-minute charges displayed before a call is placed.

However, the company said the landline and mobile calling service was not yet available and that pricing and launch details would be announced separately.

LekeeLekee describes itself as a mobile-first social platform developed in Nigeria for African users and the global diaspora, with an emphasis on low-data usage and online interaction.

The company is operated by LekeeLekee Technologies Ltd, which is registered in London and Lagos.
