Tinubu Sends Convicted Offenders Transfer Amendment Bill to House
President Bola Tinubu has asked the House of Representatives to amend Nigeria’s law on the transfer of convicted offenders, seeking to strengthen arrangements for transferring prisoners between Nigeria and other countries.
The proposed Transfer of Convicted Offenders (Enactment and Enforcement) Amendment Bill, 2026, was transmitted to the House for consideration.
The bill seeks to facilitate the transfer of convicted offenders between Nigeria and countries with which it has relevant agreements, including nations outside the Commonwealth.
The proposed amendment is expected to broaden the scope of countries covered by Nigeria’s legal framework for transferring convicted persons.
Tinubu has urged lawmakers to expedite consideration of the bill.
The proposal now awaits consideration by the House of Representatives, where Speaker Tajudeen Abbas presides over legislative proceedings.
