Burna Boy Becomes First Nigerian To Present Ballon d’Or Award As Saka Wins Socrates Trophy
Nigerian music star Burna Boy has become the first Nigerian artist to present an award at the prestigious Ballon d’Or ceremony after handing Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka the 2026 Sócrates Award in London.
The historic moment took place at the London Palladium on Monday, October 26, during the 70th edition of the Ballon d’Or ceremony, where Saka was honoured for his humanitarian work and commitment to improving the lives of disadvantaged children.
The Sócrates Award recognises footballers who use their influence and resources to support charitable initiatives and promote social development beyond the pitch.
Saka, who has Nigerian heritage, received the award in recognition of his partnership with BigShoe, a charitable organisation that provides medical assistance to children who cannot easily access essential healthcare.
In 2022, the England international sponsored life-changing surgeries for 120 children in Kano State, Nigeria, helping them access medical treatment that could significantly improve their quality of life.
He extended the initiative in 2023 by supporting medical procedures for another 100 children in Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania.
During his acceptance speech, Saka highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for children who lack access to essential services and resources.
He also read a letter from Biringiro, a 14-year-old boy from Rwanda who received eye care through the BigShoe initiative after deteriorating eyesight began affecting his daily activities and education.
Saka explained that his charitable work was driven by a desire to give children opportunities to enjoy life and pursue their dreams.
“We know how it feels to be a child and have a ball at your feet and how much joy you have. Every time I have the opportunity to help another kid have that feeling again, that’s important to me,” he said.
Meanwhile, Burna Boy’s appearance added a Nigerian milestone to the ceremony, bringing together the worlds of music and football on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
Before presenting the trophy, the Grammy-winning singer spoke about his football academy in Nigeria, describing it as part of his contribution to developing the sport and nurturing emerging talents in his home country.
He expressed hope that the academy would help produce Nigerian footballers capable of achieving international recognition.
The Sócrates Award was established in 2022 by France Football in collaboration with Peace and Sport. It is named after the late Brazilian football legend Sócrates, who was renowned for combining his football career with social activism.
Saka’s recognition underscores the growing importance of humanitarian contributions in football, with the award celebrating players whose influence extends beyond their sporting achievements.
Burna Boy’s role as presenter also highlighted the growing international profile of Nigerian entertainment and its presence at major global sporting events.
