At least 64 students of Government Science Secondary School, Batagarawa, in Katsina State, have reportedly been hospitalised after developing complications following the administration of medication for schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection.

The incident reportedly occurred on October 26, 2026, after several students began experiencing vomiting, dizziness and abdominal pain following the medication.

According to a report by security analyst Zagazola Makama, some of the affected students were reportedly unconscious when they arrived at the hospitals.

The students were taken to General Amadi Rimi Specialist Hospital in Batagarawa, Katsina General Hospital and Turai Yar’Adua Hospital for medical attention.

The circumstances surrounding the incident, including the type of medication administered, its dosage and the medical supervision provided during the exercise, have raised concerns about the safety of the students.

The report also alleged that some teachers physically assaulted students who complained of feeling unwell, accusing them of pretending to be sick instead of arranging prompt medical attention for them.

The allegations have prompted calls for a thorough investigation into both the reported medical complications and the alleged mistreatment of the students.

Makama urged the Katsina State Government and the state ministries responsible for education and health to investigate the incident and establish the circumstances that led to the hospitalisation of the students.

He called on the authorities to determine whether the medication was properly administered, whether the dosage was appropriate and whether adequate medical personnel were available to monitor the students during the exercise.
