Spanish police have opened an investigation into the death of CD Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel following a collision with an opposing goalkeeper during a Spanish second-division match.

The 30-year-old striker died in hospital on Tuesday, November 3, after suffering cardiac arrest following the incident during Tenerife’s match against FC Andorra on Monday evening.

Spain’s National Police confirmed that proceedings had been opened over possible involuntary manslaughter, with prosecutors also expected to be involved. The case is now under judicial supervision.

The collision occurred in stoppage time at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, when Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his goal to challenge De Miguel for a long ball near the halfway line.

The impact left the Tenerife forward unconscious on the pitch. Players from both teams immediately called for medical assistance, while medical personnel rushed onto the field to treat him.

Owono was shown a straight red card for the challenge. The match, which was level at 2-2, was subsequently abandoned.

De Miguel was taken to hospital after receiving emergency treatment. According to reports, he suffered cardiac arrest and was resuscitated while being transported to the hospital. Tenerife initially described his condition as serious but stable before later reporting a deterioration in his neurological condition.

The club announced his death at approximately 8 a.m. on Tuesday, expressing profound grief over the loss of the player.

In a statement, Tenerife said there were no words to ease the pain of his passing and extended its condolences to his family, friends, teammates and supporters. The family also appealed for privacy during the difficult period.

De Miguel joined Tenerife in 2025 after spells with several Spanish clubs, including Castellón, Unionistas de Salamanca and Leganés. He helped Tenerife secure promotion to Spain’s second division and had become part of the club’s attacking squad.

FC Andorra also expressed its condolences, saying it was devastated by the news and extending support to De Miguel’s family, teammates and club.

Tributes have poured in from across Spanish and European football. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and other clubs expressed sympathy, while former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué, who is the majority shareholder of Andorra, also paid tribute.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation postponed three scheduled cup matches on Tuesday as a mark of respect. Real Madrid players observed a minute of silence during training, while other clubs announced tributes ahead of their fixtures.

The police investigation is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision. However, the opening of proceedings does not establish criminal responsibility, and no conclusion has been announced regarding whether the incident involved criminal negligence.

The tragedy has renewed attention on the dangers of serious on-field collisions, although fatal injuries during professional football matches remain rare.
