Akpabio Warns Against AI-Driven Campaigns, Urges Senators To Prioritise National Unity

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged senators to remain focused on their legislative responsibilities despite growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Akpabio, who spoke on Tuesday in his welcome address as the Senate resumed plenary after its recess, also called on political actors to conduct their campaigns peacefully and warned against the use of artificial intelligence to spread manipulated campaign content.

The Senate President expressed concern over Nigerians affected by insecurity, flooding and rising living costs, particularly families whose relatives remain in the captivity of armed groups.

“During our recess, families have waited in anguish for their loved ones taken by armed men. Communities have lived beneath the shadow of violence. Floodwaters have washed away homes and livelihoods,” he said.

Akpabio said while the Senate sympathised with affected Nigerians, lawmakers must translate their concerns into concrete action through legislation, oversight and appropriation.

“So long as good Nigerians remain in captivity, a part of Nigeria is held captive. This Chamber cannot call itself free of that burden,” he said, urging security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue captives and protect vulnerable communities.

On the 2027 elections, Akpabio urged politicians to avoid violence, intimidation and misinformation, stressing that political competition should not undermine the country’s unity.

“Let the contest be vigorous. Let it be open. And let every participant remember that this is a country that must live together when the elections are over,” he said.

He specifically cautioned political actors against the misuse of artificial intelligence in election campaigns.

“No electoral prize is worth a Nigerian’s life. No victory deserves celebration if it leaves the nation deeply wounded. We must also watch out for AI-manipulated campaigns,” Akpabio said.

The Senate President reminded lawmakers that their constitutional mandate remained in force until its expiration, irrespective of political activities surrounding the 2027 elections.

“The people sent us here to serve until the end of our mandate. There is work before us, and we shall remain at our post in spite of the various campaigns across the nation,” he said.

Akpabio also called for greater patriotism and commitment to national development, urging senators to confront the country’s challenges while working to preserve national unity.

“Let us campaign with honour, debate with conviction, and serve with humility. We have returned to this Chamber because Nigeria’s work continues,” he said.

The Senate subsequently observed a minute’s silence in honour of Dr Adamu Fika, OFR, mni, a former Director-General of the National Assembly and Clerk of the Senate, who died on August 6, 2026.
