As Prince Nduka Obaigbena marks another birthday today, it is more than a personal milestone, it is an opportunity to reflect on the life and legacy of one of Africa’s most influential media entrepreneurs.

For over four decades, Obaigbena has remained at the forefront of journalism, broadcasting, business, and public discourse, building institutions that have shaped how Africa tells its own stories to the world.

A Vision Beyond Newspapers

Born on July 14, 1959, Obaigbena ventured into journalism at a young age before establishing what would become one of Nigeria’s most influential newspapers; THISDAY, in 1995.

At a time when Nigeria’s newspaper industry was highly competitive, THISDAY distinguished itself through bold reporting, premium presentation, investigative journalism, business coverage, and strong editorial influence. The publication quickly became one of the country’s leading newspapers and an agenda-setting platform for politics, governance, business, and culture.

Building a Global African Voice

Perhaps Obaigbena’s most defining contribution has been his determination to change how Africa is portrayed globally.

In 2013, he launched ARISE News, an international television network with studios in Lagos, London, Johannesburg, New York, and Abuja. His ambition was clear: provide an African-owned global news platform capable of telling African stories from an African perspective rather than through foreign lenses.

Today, ARISE News interviews world leaders, hosts major political debates, covers international conflicts, and broadcasts breaking news across continents, earning recognition as one of Africa’s most prominent international news channels.

Champion of Innovation in Media

Throughout his career, Obaigbena has consistently introduced ideas that reshaped Nigerian media.

Among his notable innovations are:

Founding THISDAY Newspaper.

Launching ARISE News as a global television brand.

Establishing ARISE Magazine, which celebrated African fashion, culture, and creativity internationally.

Creating the prestigious THISDAY Awards, honouring Nigerians and Africans making exceptional contributions in governance, business, education, and public service.

Promoting African fashion globally through ARISE Fashion Week and international showcases.

Influence Beyond the Newsroom

Obaigbena’s influence extends well beyond publishing.

Over the years, he has served in leadership roles within Nigeria’s media industry, including chairing the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN) and the Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO). He has also participated in national constitutional and political reform conferences and has contributed to discussions on governance and media development.

Internationally, he has participated in activities connected with the World Economic Forum, helping to project African perspectives in global conversations.

National Recognition

In recognition of his contributions to journalism and national development, Obaigbena was conferred with the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in 2022.

The award acknowledged decades of investment in media, democratic discourse, and institution-building.

A Career That Has Also Drawn Scrutiny

Like many influential public figures, Obaigbena’s career has not been without controversy.

Over the years, his media organisations have faced criticism over staff payment delays and business operations. In the United Kingdom, he was disqualified from serving as a company director for seven years following proceedings relating to ARISE TV’s UK operations. These issues have formed part of the public record alongside his widely acknowledged achievements in building one of Africa’s largest privately owned media organisations.
