Tensions between Cuba and the United States escalated on Monday after Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel warned that any American military action against the island nation would result in a “bloodbath” with severe consequences for regional peace and stability.

The warning followed reports by U.S.-based media outlet Axios claiming that Cuba had allegedly acquired more than 300 military drones from Russia and Iran and discussed possible attacks on U.S. targets, including the naval base at Guantanamo Bay and areas near Key West, Florida.

Reacting to the allegations, Díaz-Canel rejected claims that Cuba poses a threat to the United States, insisting that the island nation has no intention of provoking conflict. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla also defended the country’s right to self-defense under international law, accusing Washington of using “false pretexts” to justify pressure or possible intervention.

The latest dispute comes amid worsening relations between both countries, fueled by economic sanctions, Cuba’s ongoing fuel and electricity crisis, and growing U.S. concerns over Havana’s ties with Russia and Iran. Reports also indicate that the U.S. Department of Justice is considering legal action against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro over the 1996 downing of humanitarian aircraft operated by Brothers to the Rescue.

Despite the heated rhetoric, analysts note that there is currently no confirmation of imminent military action by either side. However, the exchange of threats has raised fears of deeper instability in the Caribbean region.
