Former Mark Fuhrman, the Los Angeles police detective whose controversial role in the O. J. Simpson murder trial became one of the defining moments of the case, has died at the age of 74.

According to multiple reports, Fuhrman died after battling an aggressive form of throat cancer. Authorities in Idaho confirmed his death, which reportedly occurred earlier this month.

Fuhrman was one of the lead investigators in the 1994 killings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, and became widely known after discovering a bloody glove at Simpson’s estate, evidence that prosecutors considered crucial to their case.

However, his credibility collapsed during the nationally televised trial when audio recordings surfaced of him repeatedly using racist slurs, contradicting his sworn testimony that he had not used such language in the previous decade. The revelation became a major turning point in the trial and fueled the defense’s argument that evidence may have been tainted by racial bias.

In 1996, Fuhrman pleaded no contest to perjury charges for lying under oath during the trial, making him the only person criminally convicted in connection with the Simpson case.

Despite the controversy, Fuhrman later rebuilt a public profile as a true crime author, conservative radio host, and television commentator. He authored several books related to criminal investigations and frequently appeared on American news programs discussing high-profile cases.

The O.J. Simpson trial remains one of the most closely watched court cases in American history, sparking intense debates over race, policing, celebrity justice, and the criminal justice system in the United States. Simpson was acquitted of the murders in 1995 but later found liable in a civil wrongful death lawsuit.
