Death of Major General Rabe Abubakar in Captivity a National Tragedy – David Mark
The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has described the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of abductors as a national tragedy, warning that it reflects the deepening security crisis in Nigeria.

The late General and His family
In a strongly worded reaction, the former Senate President and retired Brigadier General said the incident underscores the growing danger Nigerians face daily from terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes across the country.
Mark, who spoke emotionally on the development, said the killing of a senior military officer who once served as Director of Defence Information is a painful reminder that no one is safe in the current security environment.
“The death of Major General Rabe Abubakar in captivity is not only a personal loss to his family and the military community but also a national tragedy,” he said, noting that it raises serious concerns about the safety of citizens.
He warned that the worsening insecurity has persisted for over a decade, cutting across schools, homes, places of worship, and major highways, and leaving citizens increasingly vulnerable.
According to him, Nigeria must urgently reassess its security architecture and adopt more effective and lasting strategies to address the crisis.
“What next for the ordinary citizen if pupils and teachers are unsafe in schools, homes are invaded by criminals, and roads have become dangerous corridors?” he asked.
Despite the grim situation, Mark urged Nigerians to remain united in confronting insecurity, stressing that collective action and political will are required to reverse the trend.
He also called on all levels of government to intensify efforts to protect lives and property, describing security as the foremost responsibility of the state.
“We must act decisively now before more innocent lives are lost,” he added.
The former Senate President extended condolences to the family of the late Major General Abubakar, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and victims of ongoing insecurity across the country, expressing hope that Nigeria can still overcome its security challenges with determined leadership and national commitment.
