Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the establishment of a new Government Reserved Area (GRA) to decongest the state capital, expand housing opportunities, and attract fresh investment into the state.

The approval was announced by the Managing Director of the Edo State Geographic Information Service (EDOGIS), Associate Professor Innocent Ehiaguina Bello, who disclosed that the governor has directed the agency to commence the surveying and planning of the proposed estate.

Bello explained that the new GRA is designed to relieve pressure on the existing city centre by providing a well-planned residential environment supported by modern infrastructure and a sound land administration system.

According to Bello, the proposed layout will make room for essential services including roads, drainage systems, electricity, water supply, and telecommunications.

He emphasized that the project will be handled with professionalism, stating, “The project will be handled with professionalism, transparency and technical precision,” while noting that sustainable urban development will guide the work.

The decision to build a new GRA follows the findings of a survey commissioned by the administration to assess the cost of redesigning the existing GRA, which has been plagued by persistent flooding and deteriorating roads.

The survey reportedly put the cost of addressing these challenges in areas like Etete, Boundary, and Ugbor at over N200 billion, making the development of a new GRA a more viable option.

Beyond infrastructure, the EDOGIS boss noted that the new layout will feature clearly defined plot boundaries and designated land uses to guide development and reduce disputes.

He stressed that secure titles and reliable cadastral records will help check multiple allocations, land grabbing, and other forms of land racketeering.

Bello added that the estate will incorporate green spaces, recreational facilities, and effective stormwater drainage, while also exploring housing options for different income groups.

The project is expected to boost investor confidence, stimulate property development, and create jobs through construction and related activities. Bello reaffirmed EDOGIS’s commitment to supporting the governor’s SHINE Agenda through professional surveying and improved service delivery, urging prospective investors to seek verified information through official channels and avoid unauthorized transactions.

Details regarding the specific location, approved layout, allocation procedures, and implementation timetable are expected to be announced by the appropriate authorities after the necessary assessments and approvals are completed.
