FEC Approves Next Phase of NIGCOMSAT-2A and 2B Satellites …as Nigeria Moves to Expand Broadband With Two New Communications Satellites
The Federal Government has approved the next phase of Nigeria’s satellite communications programme, paving the way for the acquisition and deployment of NIGCOMSAT-2A and NIGCOMSAT-2B.
The approval was given by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) as part of efforts to expand Nigeria’s broadband infrastructure and extend digital connectivity to underserved and hard-to-reach communities across the country.
The two satellites will be managed by Nigeria Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
According to the government, the satellites are expected to significantly increase Nigeria’s satellite capacity and support a range of services, including broadband connectivity, broadcasting, enterprise communications and critical government operations.
The initiative is particularly targeted at areas that remain unserved or underserved by conventional telecommunications infrastructure, especially communities where the deployment of fibre-optic networks is difficult, technically challenging or prohibitively expensive.
The new satellites are also expected to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to deliver reliable communications services across the country while supporting the government’s broader digital transformation and broadband expansion agenda.
With the approval, Nigeria is taking another step towards using satellite technology to bridge the digital divide and ensure that geographical location does not prevent citizens and businesses from accessing essential digital services.
