The Federal Government has commenced a fresh round of mass terrorism trials involving more than 600 suspects accused of terrorism-related offences across the country.

The suspects, who were arrested in various security operations, are being prosecuted before the Federal High Court in Abuja on charges ranging from participation in terrorist attacks and membership of proscribed terrorist organisations to terrorism financing and failure to disclose information on terrorist activities.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), is leading the federal government’s prosecution team in the proceedings, underscoring the administration’s commitment to tackling terrorism and strengthening national security.

The latest exercise follows an earlier phase of mass trials conducted in April this year, during which more than 500 terrorism suspects were prosecuted.

According to official records from the first phase, 386 suspects were convicted, while two were acquitted and eight discharged by the court.

Government officials said the ongoing trial forms part of broader efforts to ensure accountability for terrorism-related crimes and to reinforce the country’s legal response to insurgency, banditry and other security threats.

The authorities maintain that the prosecution of terrorism suspects through the judicial process remains a critical component of Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategy, aimed at delivering justice to victims and deterring future acts of violence.

The fresh trials are expected to continue in phases as prosecutors present evidence against the suspects before the court.
