ICPC Accused of Denying El-Rufai Access to Medical Care Despite Court Order
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has reportedly been denied access to medical care while in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), according to a statement issued by his aide, Muyiwa Adekeye.
The statement alleged that El-Rufai complained of a worsening eye condition, describing his eyes as swollen, reddish, and itchy. Family members who visited him on Friday reportedly expressed concern over his health and requested that he be allowed to see a doctor.
According to the statement, two ICPC officials observed El-Rufai’s condition, raising expectations that he would either be taken to a hospital or attended to by a medical professional. However, the family claimed that no medical attention was subsequently arranged.
The statement further alleged that an official identified as Henry, who was said to have been seconded to the ICPC from another government agency, informed a family member that El-Rufai did not wish to see a doctor. The family disputed the claim, describing it as false and insensitive.
El-Rufai’s aide said the former governor had previously been taken to an eye clinic on June 4, but his condition reportedly deteriorated overnight, causing discomfort and concern among relatives who visited him the following day.
The statement also noted that El-Rufai’s legal team had earlier secured a court order permitting him access to his doctors and medical treatment due to ongoing concerns about his eye condition while in custody.
His family and legal representatives accused the anti-corruption agency of failing to comply with the court order and neglecting its duty of care toward a detainee.
They urged the ICPC to respect the rights of individuals in its custody, comply with court directives, and ensure that El-Rufai receives the medical attention he requires.
As of the time of filing this report, the ICPC had not publicly responded to the allegations.
