Mary Habila’s Death: South-East Academic Doctors Demand Independent Probe, Call for Forensic Transparency
The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) has called for a credible, independent and transparent investigation into the death of 26-year-old Mary Habila, whose passing at the residence of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, in Uburu, Ebonyi State, has sparked widespread public interest.
In a statement signed by its President, Dr. Stephen Nwala, and Secretary-General, Dr. Uzor Ngoladi, the group expressed deep sorrow over Habila’s death on June 27, 2026, describing the circumstances surrounding the incident as troubling and deserving of a thorough investigation.
FOSAD extended its condolences to Habila’s family, friends and loved ones, stressing that the death of a young Nigerian under controversial circumstances requires the highest level of attention from law enforcement authorities.
The group said the conflicting accounts surrounding the incident and subsequent public disclosures have heightened concerns, making it imperative for investigators to establish the true circumstances leading to her death through a transparent, evidence-driven process.
According to FOSAD, justice can only be achieved through investigations conducted professionally, independently and without interference, warning that any perception of compromise could further erode public confidence in Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
The forum urged the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant investigative agencies to examine every aspect of the case, including forensic evidence, witness testimonies, digital records, medical reports and any other material that could assist in uncovering the facts.
It also called for the proposed autopsy to be conducted in line with internationally accepted forensic standards, recommending the involvement of independent forensic pathologists where necessary to enhance credibility and public trust in the outcome.
While insisting that no individual should be presumed guilty without credible evidence, FOSAD maintained that no public official or influential person should be exempt from lawful scrutiny where legitimate questions exist.
“The circumstances surrounding Mary Habila’s death have attracted national and international attention, making it imperative that the investigation is conducted with utmost professionalism and openness,” the statement said.
The forum also appealed to the media, civil society organisations and members of the public to avoid speculation and the spread of unverified information that could prejudice ongoing investigations, urging all stakeholders to support the search for truth through responsible public discourse.
FOSAD reaffirmed its solidarity with Habila’s family and called on authorities to ensure they are treated with dignity, compassion and fairness throughout the investigative process.
The group added that achieving justice for Mary Habila goes beyond determining the cause of her death, saying it is also about reinforcing the principle that every Nigerian life matters and that every suspicious death deserves a credible, impartial and transparent investigation.
