Matthew Rhys Becomes First Actor to Win Two Lead Emmys in One Night

Welsh actor Matthew Rhys made history at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards after becoming the first performer to win two lead acting awards in the same night.

Rhys claimed the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie award for his performance as Nile Jarvis in Netflix’s The Beast in Me before later winning Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Mayor Tom Loftis in Apple TV+’s Widow’s Bay.

The rare achievement also made Rhys the first actor to win lead acting Emmys across all three major genres; drama, comedy and limited or anthology series. He previously won the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series award in 2018 for his role as Philip Jennings in The Americans.

The 51-year-old actor received a standing ovation after his historic double victory. In his acceptance remarks, Rhys thanked his colleagues, family and supporters, while also paying tribute to Wales, his home country.

His first award of the night came for The Beast in Me, where he portrayed Nile Jarvis, before his second victory for Widow’s Bay completed an unprecedented sweep across the lead acting categories.

The achievement comes as Widow’s Bay emerged as one of the biggest winners of the 2026 Emmys, collecting 14 awards from 19 nominations.

Rhys has enjoyed a distinguished television and film career, with his breakthrough international recognition coming through The Americans, where he starred opposite Keri Russell. His 2018 Emmy win for the series established him among television’s leading dramatic performers.

His latest victories have now added comedy and limited-series honours to that achievement, giving him a unique place in Emmy history.
