Nigeria–US Joint Airstrike Kills 21 ISWAP Fighters in Borno, Disrupts Lake Chad Terror Network
A coordinated air operation by Nigerian forces and the United States has reportedly neutralised 21 suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in Borno State, in a renewed push to weaken insurgent networks in the North-East.
The strike, carried out under Operation HADIN KAI in collaboration with the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), targeted a known insurgent enclave in Arege, Kukawa Local Government Area, along the Lake Chad Basin.
Security sources said the airstrike was executed on May 30, 2026, following intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations that confirmed the presence of fighters linked to Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the area.
The camp was reportedly being used as a coordination hub for planning attacks across communities in the Lake Chad axis, a region that has remained a flashpoint for insurgent activity over the years.
According to military sources, the precision strike resulted in the elimination of 21 militants and significantly disrupted the group’s operational capacity in the area.
Officials described the mission as intelligence-driven and part of ongoing joint security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure, degrading insurgent leadership, and restricting movement across the North-East corridor.
The operation is also said to reflect strengthened international collaboration in counter-terrorism efforts, particularly in the Lake Chad Basin, where extremist groups have continued attempts to regroup despite sustained military pressure.
Security analysts note that while the development marks a tactical success, long-term stability in the region will depend on sustained ground operations, intelligence sharing, and civilian protection strategies alongside air power.
Authorities have expressed optimism that continued coordinated strikes will further weaken ISWAP’s ability to launch attacks on vulnerable communities across Borno and neighbouring states.
