Two police officers have been killed after armed men ambushed a security patrol team in Anambra State, in a fresh attack along a rural road in the state.

The incident occurred on Sunday night along the Amansea–Ndiora–Ndiukwuenu–Awa–Ufuma Road, where officers were reportedly returning from an official assignment when they were attacked by gunmen.

Anambra State has recently witnessed repeated security incidents, particularly along remote routes linking communities in the state’s central and northern axis.

A tricycle rider who witnessed the aftermath of the attack said he heard gunshots while approaching the area and immediately turned back for safety. He later discovered that two officers had already been fatally shot.

Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Command said the officers were ambushed while returning from duty and that investigations had commenced to track down those responsible.

The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, said the command had intensified security operations following the attack and was working to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

He also cautioned residents and motorists to be vigilant, especially when approaching checkpoints that are not clearly marked or manned by identifiable security personnel, advising them to report suspicious activity to the authorities.

Police authorities have vowed to strengthen surveillance and operational response in the area as part of efforts to curb recurring attacks on security operatives and civilians along rural routes in the state.

The attack adds to growing concerns over ambushes targeting security personnel in parts of the South-East, where authorities continue to battle armed groups operating in forested and rural corridors.
