NUJ FCT COUNCIL TO HOST DISABILITY-INCLUSIVE JOURNALISM SYMPOSIUM IN ABUJA
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council is set to host a significant symposium themed “Breaking Barriers, Amplifying Voices: Inclusive Journalism” on Monday, October 6, 2025, at 10am at the NUJ Secretariat, Utako, Abuja. In a statement, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, Secretary of the NUJ FCT Council, announced the event organized by the Council’s Committee on Disability aims to highlight the media’s crucial role in dismantling stereotypes and amplifying the voices of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria’s democratic and developmental journey.

Jide Oyekunle emphasized the symposium will feature the launch of the Reserved Park Signage Initiative for the National Assembly and media organizations, aligning with the Disability (Prohibition) Act, 2018. Technical sessions led by experts from CARE, CISLAC, and Heirs Life Assurance will focus on disability rights, media advocacy, and social protection. Jide Oyekunle further noted an interactive session will showcase personal journeys of journalists with disabilities, reflecting the union’s commitment to fostering an inclusive media space.
The event underscores the NUJ FCT Council’s dedication to promoting inclusive journalism practices and supporting persons with disabilities in the media industry. It aligns with broader efforts to ensure accessibility and inclusivity in public spaces, as mandated by the Disability (Prohibition) Act, 2018.
The symposium promises to be a pivotal platform for discussions on strategies for a more inclusive media landscape, gathering journalists, disability advocates, and development partners.
