The United Kingdom has appointed Peter Vowles as its next High Commissioner to Nigeria, with the seasoned diplomat expected to assume office in September 2026.

The announcement was made by the UK Government on Tuesday, confirming that Vowles will succeed Dr. Richard Montgomery, who has served as British High Commissioner to Nigeria and will remain in the role until the transition takes place later this year.

Vowles brings decades of diplomatic and international development experience to one of Britain’s most important diplomatic postings in Africa. Most recently, he served as the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe between 2023 and 2026. Prior to that, he was Ambassador to Myanmar from 2021 to 2022.

Throughout his career, Vowles has held several senior leadership positions within the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and its predecessor, the Department for International Development (DFID). His previous roles include Transformation Director and Director for Asia, the Caribbean and Overseas Territories.

His extensive international experience spans South Asia and Africa, with assignments in Bangladesh, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kenya. He began his professional career in Zimbabwe, working in the fields of education and international development.

Speaking on his appointment, Vowles described Nigeria as a key partner for the United Kingdom and expressed enthusiasm about deepening bilateral cooperation.

“I am honoured to be appointed as British High Commissioner to Nigeria. Nigeria is a country of immense importance to the United Kingdom, and I look forward to working closely with Nigerian partners to strengthen our relationship across trade, development and security,” he said.
