Screen Diva Genevieve Nnaji Returns to The Screen After Eight Years in BBC Thriller ‘Wahala’
Nollywood icon Genevieve Nnaji is set to make a triumphant return to acting after an eight-year hiatus, joining the cast of “Wahala,” a new six-part thriller produced by BBC Studios for BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
The series, based on Nikki May’s debut novel of the same name, has been adapted by BAFTA-nominated writer Theresa Ikoko. The title translates from Nigerian Pidgin to mean “trouble” . Production is currently underway on the thriller, which has been described as ideal for fans of hit shows like “Big Little Lies” and “Sex and the City”.

Nnaji’s last on-screen appearance was in the 2018 hit “Lionheart,” which also marked her directorial debut and became the first Nigerian film acquired by Netflix . Confirming her long-awaited return on Tuesday, the BBC unveiled a star-studded female-led ensemble. Nnaji will star alongside Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo, and Susan Wokoma.
The plot follows four Nigerian-British women in their thirties as they navigate careers, love, and family in present-day London, while also revisiting their childhood homes “where danger and unsettling mysteries linger” . The story centers on best friends Simi, Boo, and Ronke, whose close-knit bond is disrupted by the arrival of a charismatic and wealthy newcomer named Isobel . As buried secrets and painful pasts begin to surface, the women’s lives are threatened, placing their friendships under increasing strain.
Reacting to the project, Nnaji expressed her enthusiasm for the role. “I’m very happy to be joining ‘Wahala’ and to be working with such a brilliant team,” the actress said. “It’s an intriguing story, and I’m excited to be a part of it”.

Her co-stars also shared their excitement. Cush Jumbo noted she is “very excited to be part of this show and to bring this fantastic story to the screen,” while Susan Wokoma called it “an honour to be a part of [Theresa Ikoko’s] powerhouse ‘Wahala’ team”.
Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, praised the production. “Theresa’s scripts for ‘Wahala’ are an absolute joy – riveting, full of rich and complex characters, and everything you’d want from Nikki May’s exquisite book brought vividly to life on screen,” Salt said. “It’s no surprise that it’s attracted a cast of this magnificent calibre”.
The series is produced by Firebird Pictures, a division of BBC Studios . While a specific premiere date has yet to be announced, “Wahala” will air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer upon release.
