Six people have been injured following a stabbing incident at Foss High School in Tacoma, authorities have confirmed.

According to police, the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon after what officials described as an altercation. Five students and an adult security guard were taken to hospital, while the suspect, also a student at the school, was detained at the scene.

The Tacoma Fire Department said all six victims were initially treated and transported for medical care, with earlier reports indicating some were in critical condition. However, authorities later confirmed that all victims were in stable condition.

Police spokesperson Shelbie Boyd said officers responded to reports of an active assault around 13:35 local time and were able to quickly locate the suspect and secure the area.

The suspect, who also sustained injuries, has been booked on five counts of first degree assault, according to the Tacoma Police Department.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing and have urged anyone with video footage of the incident to come forward.

School officials announced that Foss High School will remain closed on Friday, with plans to reopen on Monday, May 4. Counsellors are expected to be available to support students and staff following the incident.

The latest violence comes nearly two decades after a fatal shooting at the same school in 2007, highlighting ongoing concerns about safety in educational institutions in parts of the United States.
