A Russian-installed official has said the death toll from a strike on a student dormitory has risen to 10, as rescue operations and casualty assessments continue in the aftermath of the attack.

The official, speaking in a region under Russian occupation in eastern Ukraine, said the building was hit during overnight hostilities, resulting in significant destruction and multiple civilian casualties. Emergency teams were reportedly deployed to search through rubble and assist survivors.

The strike is the latest in a series of attacks reported in contested areas of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, where both sides have frequently accused each other of targeting civilian infrastructure. Ukraine has not officially confirmed responsibility for the strike, and independent verification of battlefield claims from occupied territories remains limited due to restricted access for international observers.

Local authorities installed by Russia claim the dormitory housed students and civilian staff at the time of the strike, while asserting that rescue operations are still ongoing and the casualty figure may change as more victims are recovered.

The incident adds to growing international concern over civilian safety in frontline regions, where residential buildings, schools, and public facilities have repeatedly been caught in the crossfire since the escalation of the conflict.

Investigations into the circumstances of the strike are ongoing, with both sides maintaining conflicting accounts of responsibility.
