10 Rescued Alive as Emergency Teams Battle to Save Victims of Lagos Building Collapse
Emergency responders have rescued 10 persons alive from the rubble of a collapsed residential building in the Satellite Town area of Lagos State, as search-and-rescue operations continue for other victims who may still be trapped.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said it received a distress call at about 11:37 a.m. on Thursday regarding the collapse of a storey building located along Old Ojo Road, near Alakija Bus Stop, off the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
According to the Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, firefighters from the Ijegun-Egba Fire Station were immediately deployed to the scene and arrived within minutes to commence rescue operations.
“The incident involves the collapse of a storey building, an existing residential structure occupied by multiple residents at the time of the incident,” Adeseye said in a statement.
She disclosed that 10 occupants had so far been rescued alive from the debris with varying degrees of injuries and were subsequently handed over to medical personnel for treatment.
Emergency workers are continuing intensive search-and-rescue efforts amid concerns that additional occupants may still be trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
Rescue teams at the scene are using coordinated strategies to locate, extricate and evacuate victims while ensuring the safety of responders and nearby residents.
Several emergency and security agencies have joined the operation, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Navy, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.
The cause of the building collapse has yet to be officially determined, while authorities have promised to provide further updates as rescue operations progress.
The latest incident adds to growing concerns over recurring cases of building collapse in Lagos, prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement of building regulations and compliance with safety standards.
As rescue efforts continue, anxious residents and relatives of occupants remain gathered at the scene, awaiting updates on those believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.
