2027: INEC Register Deadline Threatens Aspirants, Defectors

Fresh uncertainty has emerged over the political future of many aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections as the window for political parties to submit updated membership registers to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) closes today.

The development is expected to affect several presidential, governorship, National Assembly and state assembly hopefuls, particularly those seeking tickets on platforms battling unresolved leadership crises and internal factional disputes.

There are also growing fears that intending defectors may be shut out of the electoral process if their new parties fail to regularise membership documentation before the deadline set by Independent National Electoral Commission.

Although the official deadline elapsed yesterday, which fell on a non-working day, political observers say parties may still be allowed to submit the registers on Monday when INEC offices reopen.

Analysts warn that the tight timeline could create serious complications for aspirants whose political status remains uncertain amid ongoing negotiations, defections and legal battles within several parties.

The situation is particularly troubling for politicians planning to switch allegiances ahead of party primaries, as failure to appear in the official membership register of a political party may jeopardise eligibility to contest under its platform.

The uncertainty is compounded by lingering leadership disputes in some opposition parties, where rival factions continue to lay claim to party structures and authority to conduct primaries.

Observers say unless the disputes are resolved quickly, many parties may struggle to meet subsequent INEC timelines relating to congresses, primaries and candidate nominations.

Political stakeholders have therefore urged parties to urgently reconcile aggrieved factions and comply with electoral regulations to avoid mass disqualification of aspirants ahead of the 2027 polls.
