FORMER VICE PRESIDENT ATIKU ABUBAKAR RESIGNS FROM PDP

Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria and a founding member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has announced his resignation from the party with immediate effect. In a letter dated July 14, 2025, Abubakar cited the party’s current trajectory as the reason for his decision, stating that it diverges from the foundational principles the party was built on.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” Abubakar wrote in his letter to the Chairman of the PDP in Jada LGA, Adamawa State. “Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life.”

Abubakar expressed his gratitude to the party for the opportunities he had been given, but noted that he could no longer continue as a member due to the party’s current direction. “It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” he said.

The former Vice President wished the party and its leadership well in the future, saying “I wish the Party and its leadership all the best in the future.” Abubakar’s resignation marks a significant development in Nigerian politics, given his long history with the PDP and his role as a founding member.
