Former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have held separate meetings with Senator David Mark, National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in Abuja. The meetings are seen as crucial amid growing political realignments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with observers linking them to efforts to forge opposition alliances.

Atiku Abubakar, who met with David Mark earlier, described the gathering as a “meeting of the Nigerian people against the oligarchs who promote poverty and insecurity in the land” on his X page, sharing images of key participants. The ADC’s First National Caucus meeting, attended by Mark, Atiku, and other leaders like former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, preceded Jonathan’s visit.

Jonathan, central to recent cross-party consultations, continues to play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s democracy. Details of discussions remain undisclosed, but political observers believe the meetings relate to strengthening opposition positioning ahead of 2027. Some PDP members have urged Jonathan to contest against President Bola Tinubu.

The ADC has directed members to resign from other parties, focusing on addressing Nigeria’s insecurity and economic hardship. Atiku remains vocal against President Tinubu’s administration, leading opposition calls for change in 2027.
