Toyin Abraham: My Support for Tinubu Affected My Career

Popular Nollywood actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham has opened up about the impact her public support for President Bola Ahmed7 Tinubu had on her career, admitting that the political stance brought unexpected consequences.

The actress made the revelation in a recent conversation with fellow Nollywood star Timini Egbuson while offering advice on how actors can improve the box-office performance of their movies.

In a video that has since circulated widely on social media, Abraham cautioned Egbuson against publicly supporting political figures, stressing that celebrities should remain neutral to avoid alienating audiences.

“The first advice I will give you in my entire life is don’t put your mouth in politics. Don’t tell them you’re supporting anybody. Don’t support anybody, just be on your own. Be neutral,” she said.

When reminded that she had openly supported Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, the actress responded, “That was then,” before adding in a dramatic reaction that the decision had indeed affected her work.

Her comments appear to reference the intense criticism and backlash she faced online after declaring support for the current president during the election period.

The video also showed Abraham sharing candid reflections about her experience, suggesting that public figures in the entertainment industry should focus more on their craft and avoid political endorsements that could divide their fan base.

The clip was later shared online by Egbuson, who jokingly wrote that he and his colleague had visited Abraham to “collect orientation” on how to succeed at the box office.
