The Edo State Government has granted licences to Chinese firms to generate electricity from the state’s coal deposits as part of efforts to boost power supply to residents.

Commissioner for Mining, Andrew Ijegbai, revealed in an interview that feasibility studies will determine the megawatt capacity of electricity to be produced. The Chinese companies will also venture into cement and ceramic tile production using local clay deposits. The ministry has been tasked with conducting extensive mineral exploration across the state.

Ijegbai expressed optimism that mineral-derived revenue would significantly contribute to the state’s finances in the coming years. He further highlighted that Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration has cracked down on illegal mining activities, with five illegal mining groups already charged in court.

“Okpebholo has released significant funds to support exploration of our mineral resources. We have signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with two Chinese companies to commence cement production, with operations expected to start very soon,” Ijegbai stated.

In a separate development, the Edo State Government has increased the monthly subvention to the state-owned Edo University, Iyamho from N100 million to N250 million to enhance academic excellence. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Victor Adetimirin announced this at the institution’s 7th convocation, noting that the increased funding has boosted staff morale and improved students’ academic performance.

The convocation saw 850 students graduate, including 693 first-degree and 157 postgraduate holders.
