Nigeria’s Minister of Labour and Employment, Nkeriuka Onyejiocha, has resigned from her position, ending her tenure in one of the country’s most strategic ministries.

Her departure has sparked reactions across political, labour, and policy circles, given the ministry’s central role in industrial relations, workforce regulation, and employment policy.

While official reasons for the resignation have not been disclosed, sources suggest it may be linked to political recalibration, administrative pressures, and shifting priorities within the federal cabinet.

Onyejiocha’s exit marks a major leadership change as Nigeria continues to face challenges like wage disputes, unemployment, and union-government negotiations.

A holder of a PhD and the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), Onyejiocha was appointed by Bola Ahmed Tinubu to bring legislative experience into the executive, leveraging her extensive career in the House of Representatives representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State.

During her tenure, she managed sensitive issues including labour union negotiations over wage adjustments, fuel subsidy disputes, and broader economic reforms affecting workers’ welfare.

Her leadership coincided with heightened labour activism, requiring delicate balancing between industrial harmony and government policy.

Observers note that her resignation may affect ongoing labour negotiations and policy continuity. The presidency has not yet announced a successor, but a prompt appointment is expected to ensure stability in the ministry.

Reactions to Onyejiocha’s resignation have been mixed, with some commending her efforts in engaging with labour unions and others emphasizing the need for structural reforms to tackle unemployment and improve job quality.
