President Bola Tinubu has pledged the deployment of an artificial intelligence-enabled network of over 5,000 digital cameras across Plateau State to support law enforcement agencies in combating insecurity.

Speaking during his visit to Jos on Thursday, the President commiserated with the government and people of Plateau over the March 29 gun attacks in Angwan Rukuba, which claimed several lives. “I promise you that this experience will not repeat itself,” he said.

President Tinubu directed the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (Rtd), Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Waidi Shaibu, and Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

He also tasked the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijjani, with overseeing the immediate installation of the cameras in coordination with the Plateau State Government and security agencies. The system will initially be installed in Jos before being expanded across the state, building on similar deployments in Lagos and Enugu.

Addressing families affected by the attacks, President Tinubu offered condolences and reassurance. “It is only God that can give you joy and comfort. No amount of money can recompense for lost souls,” he said, adding that the government would ensure justice and equitable support for victims through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.

The President stressed the importance of proactive measures, saying, “Governor, you and I were elected on a promise of peace and security, not to comfort and create widows and widowers. I want to be here to establish peace.”

Governor Caleb Mutfwang described the recent attacks as a temporary setback and expressed confidence in the ongoing efforts of security agencies. He welcomed the President’s approval for the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards to bolster state security.

Other stakeholders, including APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, former governors Jonah David Jang and Simon Lalong, and former Deputy Speaker Ahmed Idris Wase, called for increased collaboration between communities and security agencies, and for a closed-door meeting in Abuja to find lasting solutions.

They noted that Plateau’s peace depends on the cooperation of its people alongside proactive security measures.

The President’s visit aims to reinforce security, provide support to affected families, and accelerate strategies to prevent future violence across Plateau State.
