NiDCOM Secures Return of Nigerians Stranded at South African Airport, Issues Fresh Travel Advisory
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed that three Nigerians stranded at an airport in South Africa have been cleared and are on their way back home.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Commission said the affected individuals had departed and are expected to arrive in Lagos on Monday morning.
NiDCOM attributed the incident to several factors, notably the growing reliance on unregulated visa agents.
According to the Commission, such agents often handle critical parts of visa applications including travel purpose, itinerary, and accommodation without the applicants’ full knowledge or consent.
It explained that this practice leaves many travellers unable to defend the information submitted on their behalf during immigration checks, frequently resulting in denial of entry.
The Commission further revealed that in the case of one of the stranded individuals, previous derogatory remarks about the South African government posted online had placed the person on a watchlist.
When questioned at the point of entry, the individual reportedly failed to justify the statements, worsening the situation.
NiDCOM therefore urged Nigerians to take greater responsibility for their travel processes by applying directly or using only verified agents, and ensuring that all submitted information is accurate and personally reviewed.
It also warned travellers to be mindful of their digital footprint, noting that immigration authorities increasingly scrutinise social media activity, which can influence visa decisions or trigger additional screening.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to engaging with relevant South African authorities to prevent similar incidents in the future, while advising Nigerians to always travel with genuine documentation and clear, verifiable reasons for their visits.
“Responsible preparation protects not only the individual but also Nigeria’s reputation,” the Commission stated.
