At least 11 people have been killed after unidentified gunmen opened fire at a popular picnic location in eastern Afghanistan, according to local officials and security sources.

The attack reportedly took place in a recreational area frequented by families and young people, turning what was meant to be a peaceful outing into a scene of chaos and bloodshed. Eyewitnesses said the assailants arrived suddenly and began shooting indiscriminately at civilians gathered at the site.

Provincial authorities confirmed the death toll and noted that several others sustained injuries, with victims rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment. The exact number of wounded remains unclear as emergency responders continue to assess the situation.

Security forces have since cordoned off the area and launched a manhunt for the perpetrators. No group has officially claimed responsibility for the attack, but officials say investigations are ongoing.

While motives remain uncertain, the incident underscores ongoing security challenges in parts of Afghanistan, where attacks targeting civilians, though reduced in frequency in recent years, still occur.

Local leaders have condemned the violence, describing it as a “heinous act” against innocent civilians. There are growing calls for heightened security at public gathering spots to prevent further tragedies.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant as efforts continue to track down those responsible.
