A mass shooting at a residence in Erie, Pennsylvania, has left eight people dead, including two young children and a pregnant woman, alongside the suspected gunman, who also died, police said. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the killings.

The shooting occurred on Friday, October 9, at a home in the 700 block of Perry Street on Erie’s east side. Police responded at about 4:55 p.m. after receiving an alert from the city’s ShotSpotter gunshot-detection system, according to Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah.

Officers found two women dead outside the residence. After securing the scene and entering the home, they discovered the bodies of the other victims and the 45-year-old suspected shooter, who appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police said seven of the eight victims were related to the suspect, while the eighth was a friend of the pregnant woman. The victims included a five-year-old boy, a young girl aged about two, several adults and a woman who was approximately eight months pregnant.

Investigators reviewing video and audio evidence said two distressed women arrived at the residence shortly before 5 p.m. and knocked repeatedly on the door. The suspect allegedly came outside and shot the women before returning into the house. Authorities said all the deaths occurred before police arrived and that no further shots were fired after officers reached the scene.

The motive for the shooting has not been established. Police said investigators were interviewing relatives and examining evidence, including the cellphones of the women who were killed outside the home, to reconstruct the events leading up to the attack.

Erie Police Chief Lorah described the incident as one of the most difficult and heartbreaking scenes of his career. He urged the public not to speculate about the motive or circulate unverified information while the investigation continues.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said he had spoken with Erie Mayor Daria Devlin and offered the state’s full support to the city and the victims’ relatives. The mayor also expressed condolences to the families and said the community was grieving alongside them.

The tragedy has shocked the local community, with authorities confirming that there was no continuing threat to the public. Investigators are continuing to establish the full circumstances of the shooting, while officials have urged residents to respect the privacy of the victims’ families.
