US federal immigration investigators have searched the Washington-area home of Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, escalating tensions between the Trump administration and one of its most outspoken critics just weeks before the country’s midterm elections.

Agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the investigative arm of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, carried out the search early Monday, October 12. The US Department of Justice confirmed that investigators had executed a court-authorised search warrant as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation but did not disclose the specific allegations or evidence being sought.

Reports by Reuters, the Associated Press and CBS News said the investigation was believed to concern allegations relating to Omar’s immigration paperwork. The allegations reportedly focus on documents completed by her late father when she was a child. Authorities have not publicly detailed the evidence underpinning the investigation, and no charges against the congresswoman were announced in the reports.

Omar, who represents Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District and was born in Somalia, has repeatedly denied allegations of immigration fraud. She became a US citizen in 2000 and has described the accusations against her as politically motivated.

In response to the search, Omar said the operation was an attempt to target political opponents and misuse federal law enforcement. She vowed that the action would not silence her criticism of President Donald Trump and his administration’s immigration policies.

The congresswoman has long been a target of Trump’s criticism, particularly over her views on immigration and the treatment of Somali Americans. Senior administration officials have also publicly discussed an investigation into her immigration history, although they have not presented detailed public evidence establishing wrongdoing.

The search has drawn criticism from Democratic leaders, who questioned its timing less than a month before the November 3 midterm elections. They argued that federal law enforcement must operate independently of political considerations, particularly when an elected official is seeking re-election.

The timing is significant because the Justice Department has historically sought to avoid investigative actions that could influence elections. However, the existence of a court-authorised search warrant does not, by itself, establish whether the investigation is politically motivated or whether the allegations are true.

Omar, one of the first Muslim women elected to the US House of Representatives, has faced years of political attacks and threats. Her supporters say the search reinforces concerns about the use of federal investigative powers against political opponents, while authorities have described the operation as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

The Justice Department has not released further details about the scope of the inquiry, and it remains unclear whether the search will lead to charges or additional investigative steps.
