The legislative council of Ezinihite Mbaise Local Government Area has indefinitely suspended its Vice Chairman, Prince Matthew Igbokwe, over alleged involvement in robbery and a car theft syndicate in Lagos.

Prince Igbokwe was reportedly arrested last week by the Lagos State Police Command in connection with a suspected vehicle theft network. Confirming the development, police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi stated that the vice chairman is currently under investigation.

Following the arrest, the Ezinihite Mbaise Legislative Council announced his indefinite suspension on Monday, April 13, and issued a seven-day impeachment notice.

According to the council, the action was based on multiple allegations of misconduct, including persistent absenteeism from official duties, unauthorized travel outside Imo State without legislative approval, and alleged involvement in robbery and other criminal activities. The council cited his reported arrest and detention as evidence of conduct unbecoming of a public office holder.

The lawmakers further accused Igbokwe of bringing embarrassment to the administration of Hope Uzodimma, as well as the Executive Chairman of Ezinihite Mbaise, Ambrose Chinedum Nwachukwu, and the people of Imo State.

The motion for suspension was moved by Chief Whip Hon. Ajaa Echezolachi, supported by Deputy Leader Hon. Steven Echeta, and seconded by Majority Leader Hon. Vincent Kelechi Egwurugwu. The decision was unanimously adopted by all members present.

Speaking on the development, Council Leader Rt. Hon. Deaconess Mbechi Benson described the suspension as necessary to protect the integrity and image of the local government and its people. She noted that the council acted in accordance with the Imo State Local Government Administration Law No. 6 of 2022 (as amended).
