The Lagos State Government has taken delivery of 24 additional train cars to enhance operations on the Lagos Red Line, as part of efforts to improve mass transit and ease commuting across the state.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed the development while on an official visit to China, alongside top officials of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority and the Ministry of Transportation. He shared images of the newly acquired rolling stock on his social media platforms.

According to the governor, the additional train cars will significantly increase capacity on the corridor, reduce passenger waiting times, and improve the overall commuting experience for Lagos residents.

The Red Line, inaugurated in February 2024, is a 37-kilometre rail corridor stretching from Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo in Lagos. It passes through key districts such as Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, and Yaba, providing a vital alternative to road transport in the traffic-congested city.

Designed as part of Lagos’ broader rail master plan, the line shares right-of-way with infrastructure managed by the Nigerian Railway Corporation and connects with the Blue Line at strategic interchanges, supporting the vision of an integrated, multimodal transport network.

The government noted that the Red Line has recorded growing patronage since its launch, driven by demand for faster and more predictable transport options. It added that the new trains would strengthen service delivery along the corridor.

Authorities also revealed plans to extend the Red Line beyond its current terminals and further integrate it with bus rapid transit and water transport systems, in a bid to expand connectivity and improve urban mobility across the state.
